Rapid Brain Cooling in Intubated Pigs through Nasal Flushing with Oxygen: Prevention of Brain Hyperthermia
Local cooling of the brain by the respiratory air is found in many animal species. The mechanism is based on cooling of the nasal vein blood and heat transfer in the cavernous sinus/carotid artery complex and is therefore not active in anaesthetised, intubated animals. The present experiment was made to investigate the effects of oxygen flushing of the nasal cavities in such animals. Nine anaesthetised, intubated male pigs were used. The temperatures in the third ventricle and rectum were measured continuously. Oxygen was infused into the nasal cavities during 10 min periods interrupted by 10 min without flow. The nasal oxygen flow constantly induced a rapid, reversible and flow dependant decrease in brain temperature: 0.25°C ± 0.04, (n = 2) (mean ± SD, n) at <4 l/min; 1.35°C ± 0.78, (n = 20) at 4–6 l/min; and 1.44°C ± 0.62, (n = 6) at >6 l/min. The ventricle temperature decreased 0.59°C ± 0.23, (n = 8) when the animals were transferred to spontaneous respiration and the tracheal tube removed. It may be possible to protect the brain in intubated animals and humans from heat-induced damages by establishment of nasal flushing
Virus–Host Interactions Between Nonsecretors and Human Norovirus
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Human norovirus infection is the leading
cause of acute gastroenteritis. Genetic polymorphisms, mediated
by the FUT2 gene (secretor enzyme), define strain susceptibility.
Secretors express a diverse set of fucosylated histoblood group
antigen carbohydrates (HBGA) on mucosal cells; nonsecretors
(FUT2-/-) express a limited array of HBGAs. Thus, nonsecretors
have less diverse norovirus strain infections, including resistance
to the epidemiologically dominant GII.4 strains. Because future
human norovirus vaccines will comprise GII.4 antigen and because
secretor phenotype impacts GII.4 infection and immunity, nonsecretors may mimic young children immunologically in response
to GII.4 vaccination, providing a needed model to study crossprotection in the context of limited pre-exposure.
METHODS: By using specimens collected from the first characterized nonsecretor cohort naturally infected with GII.2
human norovirus, we evaluated the breadth of serologic immunity by surrogate neutralization assays, and cellular activation and cytokine production by flow cytometry.
RESULTS: GII.2 infection resulted in broad antibody and
cellular immunity activation that persisted for at least 30 days
for T cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells, and for 180 days for
blocking antibody. Multiple cellular lineages expressing interferon-g and tumor necrosis factor-a dominated the response.
Both T-cell and B-cell responses were cross-reactive with other
GII strains, but not GI strains. To promote entry mechanisms,
inclusion of bile acids was essential for GII.2 binding to
nonsecretor HBGAs.
CONCLUSIONS: These data support development of withingenogroup, cross-reactive antibody and T-cell immunity, key
outcomes that may provide the foundation for eliciting broad
immune responses after GII.4 vaccination in individuals with
limited GII.4 immunity, including young children
Uncertainty quantification in medical image segmentation with normalizing flows
Medical image segmentation is inherently an ambiguous task due to factors
such as partial volumes and variations in anatomical definitions. While in most
cases the segmentation uncertainty is around the border of structures of
interest, there can also be considerable inter-rater differences. The class of
conditional variational autoencoders (cVAE) offers a principled approach to
inferring distributions over plausible segmentations that are conditioned on
input images. Segmentation uncertainty estimated from samples of such
distributions can be more informative than using pixel level probability
scores. In this work, we propose a novel conditional generative model that is
based on conditional Normalizing Flow (cFlow). The basic idea is to increase
the expressivity of the cVAE by introducing a cFlow transformation step after
the encoder. This yields improved approximations of the latent posterior
distribution, allowing the model to capture richer segmentation variations.
With this we show that the quality and diversity of samples obtained from our
conditional generative model is enhanced. Performance of our model, which we
call cFlow Net, is evaluated on two medical imaging datasets demonstrating
substantial improvements in both qualitative and quantitative measures when

Molecular characterisation of the early response in pigs to experimental infection with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae using cDNA microarrays
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The bacterium <it>Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae </it>is responsible for porcine pleuropneumonia, a widespread, highly contagious and often fatal respiratory disease of pigs. The general porcine innate immune response after <it>A. pleuropneumoniae </it>infection is still not clarified. The objective of this study was hence to characterise the transcriptional response, measured by using cDNA microarrays, in pigs 24 hours after experimental inoculation with <it>A. pleuropneumoniae</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Microarray analyses were conducted to reveal genes being differentially expressed in inflamed versus non-inflamed lung tissue sampled from inoculated animals as well as in liver and tracheobronchial lymph node tissue sampled from three inoculated animals versus two non-inoculated animals. The lung samples were studied using a porcine cDNA microarray with 5375 unique PCR products while liver tissue and tracheobronchial lymph node tissue were hybridised to an expanded version of the porcine microarray with 26879 unique PCR products.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 357 genes differed significantly in expression between infected and non-infected lung tissue, 713 genes differed in expression in liver tissue from infected versus non-infected animals and 130 genes differed in expression in tracheobronchial lymph node tissue from infected versus non-infected animals. Among these genes, several have previously been described to be part of a general host response to infections encoding immune response related proteins. In inflamed lung tissue, genes encoding immune activating proteins and other pro-inflammatory mediators of the innate immune response were found to be up-regulated. Genes encoding different acute phase reactants were found to be differentially expressed in the liver.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The obtained results are largely in accordance with previous studies of the mammalian immune response. Furthermore, a number of differentially expressed genes have not previously been associated with infection or are presently unidentified. Determination of their specific roles during infection may lead to a better understanding of innate immunity in pigs. Although additional work including more animals is clearly needed to elucidate host response to porcine pleuropneumonia, the results presented in this study demonstrate three subsets of genes consistently expressed at different levels depending upon infection status.</p
Sustainable bioethanol production combining biorefinery principles using combined raw materials from wheat undersown with clover-grass
To obtain the best possible net energy balance of the bioethanol production the biomass raw materials used need to be produced with limited use of non-renewable fossil fuels. Intercropping strategies are known to maximize growth and productivity by including more than one species in the crop stand, very often with legumes as one of the components. In the present study clover-grass is undersown in a traditional wheat crop. Thereby, it is possible to increase input of symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen into the cropping systems and reduce the need for fertilizer applications. Furthermore, when using such wheat and clover-grass mixtures as raw material, addition of urea and other fermentation nutrients produced from fossil fuels can be reduced in the whole ethanol manufacturing chain. Using second generation ethanol technology mixtures of relative proportions of wheat straw and clover-grass (15:85, 50:50, and 85:15) were pretreated by wet oxidation. The results showed that supplementing wheat straw with clover-grass had a positive effect on the ethanol yield in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation experiments, and the effect was more pronounced in inhibitory substrates. The highest ethanol yield (80% of theoretical) was obtained in the experiment with high fraction (85%) of clover-grass. In order to improve the sugar recovery of clover-grass, it should be separated into a green juice (containing free sugars, fructan, amino acids, vitamins and soluble minerals) for direct fermentation and a fibre pulp for pretreatment together with wheat straw. A Systematic Review of Online Sex Addiction and Clinical Treatments Using CONSORT Evaluation
Researchers have suggested that the advances of the Internet over the past two decades have gradually eliminated traditional offline methods of obtaining sexual material. Additionally, research on cybersex and/or online sex addictions has increased alongside the development of online technology. The present study extended the findings from Griffiths’ (2012) systematic empirical review of online sex addiction by additionally investigating empirical studies that implemented and/or documented clinical treatments for online sex addiction in adults. A total of nine studies were identified and then each underwent a CONSORT evaluation. The main findings of the present review provide some evidence to suggest that some treatments (both psychological and/or pharmacological) provide positive outcomes among those experiencing difficulties with online sex addiction. Similar to Griffiths’ original review, this study recommends that further research is warranted to establish the efficacy of empirically driven treatments for online sex addiction
Random walk with barriers: Diffusion restricted by permeable membranes
Restrictions to molecular motion by barriers (membranes) are ubiquitous in
biological tissues, porous media and composite materials. A major challenge is
to characterize the microstructure of a material or an organism
nondestructively using a bulk transport measurement. Here we demonstrate how
the long-range structural correlations introduced by permeable membranes give
rise to distinct features of transport. We consider Brownian motion restricted
by randomly placed and oriented permeable membranes and focus on the
disorder-averaged diffusion propagator using a scattering approach. The
renormalization group solution reveals a scaling behavior of the diffusion
coefficient for large times, with a characteristically slow inverse square root
time dependence. The predicted time dependence of the diffusion coefficient
agrees well with Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions. Our results can be
used to identify permeable membranes as restrictions to transport in disordered
materials and in biological tissues, and to quantify their permeability and

How heel oxygenation changes under pressure
The mechanism of heel pressure ulcers after hip surgery is not entirely understood. The purpose of this one-group, prospective, repeated-measures design study was to examine how the external pressure of the bed surface affects heel skin oxygen tension in adults on the first 3 days after hip surgery. Transcutaneous oxygen sensors were placed on the plantar surface of each foot, close to the heels. Measures were taken on room air and with an oxygen challenge with the heels (1) suspended above the bed surface (preload), (2) on the bed surface for 15 minutes (loading), and (3) again suspended above the bed surface for 15 minutes (unloading). Eighteen hip surgery patients (mean age 58.3±16.1 years) from two hospitals participated. When compared with preload on room air, both loading and unloading on all 3 days resulted in a reduction in heel oxygen tension bilaterally (p\u3c0.001). Heel oxygenation decreased without the anticipated hyperemic response, raising the question of whether this is a sign of increased pressure ulcer risk. Further work is needed to understand why this short period of external pressure results in decreased oxygenation and why oxygen tension does not return to baseline when pressure is removed
Zero Sound in Strange Metallic Holography
One way to model the strange metal phase of certain materials is via a
holographic description in terms of probe D-branes in a Lifshitz spacetime,
characterised by a dynamical exponent z. The background geometry is dual to a
strongly-interacting quantum critical theory while the probe D-branes are dual
to a finite density of charge carriers that can exhibit the characteristic
properties of strange metals. We compute holographically the low-frequency and
low-momentum form of the charge density and current retarded Green's functions
in these systems for massless charge carriers. The results reveal a
quasi-particle excitation when z<2, which in analogy with Landau Fermi liquids
we call zero sound. The real part of the dispersion relation depends on
momentum k linearly, while the imaginary part goes as k^2/z. When z is greater
than or equal to 2 the zero sound is not a well-defined quasi-particle. We also
compute the frequency-dependent conductivity in arbitrary spacetime dimensions.
Using that as a measure of the charge current spectral function, we find that
the zero sound appears only when the spectral function consists of a single
